Choosing a Wine Decanter, but why decant a wine ? It doesn’t really affect the taste of your wine, but it’s definitely cleaner than serving yourself or your guests something with particles in it. By the way, don’t worry about sediment in your wine; it’s not a mistake made by the winemaker. Tannins, especially in red wines, are natural particles in your wine. These little particles can cling to your palate and make it dry if the wine is too young. In older wines, the tannins eventually settle at the bottom of the bottle !
This often happens with older wines, the ones you open for celebrations or meals. You think you’ll treat yourself and your guests, but once the bottle is opened, and almost everyone has been served, the last few glasses might contain some unattractive sediment.
That’s where decanting comes in, and it can be done in several ways. How do you decant a wine ? Welcome to my guide on Decanters and Accessories for Decanting Your Wine !
I won’t talk about “decanting” accessories, as I’m not necessarily an expert in using that tool. Also, this article doesn’t really focus on white wines, which usually don’t have sediment, except possibly some tartar that may have formed. However, you can use a decanter to aerate white or red wine. The aromas will oxidize more slowly, and you’ll be able to control the process better to open up the bouquet of your young wines.es

Old wine means old cork, which means a two-pronged corkscrew
We rarely decant young wines, for the simple reason that the material forming the sediment at the bottom of your bottle can simply be naturally formed tartar, settled tannins, or any other deposits that, over time, end up at the bottom of the bottle.
But with old bottles, there are obviously old corks, and it’s not always easy to open a bottle without breaking the old cork that has been soaked by this delightful drink over the years. There is a very important tool to remove the cork without breaking it, pushing it in, or losing it inside the bottle: a two-pronged corkscrew. I discuss it on the corkscrews page, which you can find right here by clicking the button below !
Finally for the Wine Decanter :
As mentioned on the wine decanter page, for this decanter, I recommend using a candle or a flashlight. Shine the light on the spout of your decanter to control your decanting process. This will help you see the sediment as it arrives, especially in very dark wines !
The micro-oxygenation provided by a decanter allows you to open up the bouquet of your wine.
Depending on the profile, it can make the wine fruitier and more aromatic due to the contact with air. It can also soften the acidity in your wine, making it less intense. So, don’t skip the decanting step ! Once again, this is not a tool reserved for sommeliers or professionals !
Additional note here as well : when transferring your wine into the decanter, keep your bottle horizontal for as long as possible, preferably a day in advance, to decant more effectively ! Don’t forget to wine your decanter before using it.
Open your bottle, pour a small amount of wine into the decanter. Swirl the wine along the walls of the decanter to remove any potential bad odors or dust, so that none of your guests have to taste this mixture in their wine glass !
